Being Healthy for Your Grandchildren

I Refuse to Be the Empty Chair

I Refuse to Be the Empty Chair

I Refuse to Be the Empty Chair

The Moment Everything Changed — A Story About Health, Legacy, and the People We Love Most

There are moments in life that don’t just touch you…
They
 rearrange you.
This is one of those moments.
It wasn’t my story at first.
It was hers.

The Day She Said It Out Loud

We were sitting at her kitchen table—coffee half-drunk, life half-discussed—when she said something I haven’t been able to forget.
“I just want to be there for my grandkids. I don’t want to be the empty chair at the table.”
She didn’t cry when she said it.
But I did.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.

When “Getting Healthy” Stops Being About Weight

For most of our lives, “being healthy” meant one thing:
  • Losing weight
  • Looking better
  • Fitting into smaller jeans
  • Starting (and quitting) diets
But somewhere along the way…
the conversation shifts.
It becomes less about how we look
and more about whether we’ll
 be here at all.
That’s the moment everything changes.

The Empty Chair No One Talks About

You’ve seen it.
At holidays.
At weddings.
At birthdays.
There’s always a chair that’s quietly left empty—not physically… but emotionally.
The person who should be there…
isn’t.
And no one ever says it out loud, but everyone feels it:
“They should still be here.”
My friend wasn’t being dramatic.
She was being honest.

Why Being Healthy for Your Grandchildren Hits Different

There is something about grandchildren that rewires your priorities overnight.
It’s no longer:
  • “I should eat better.”
  • “I should exercise more.”
It becomes:
  • “Will I be around to see them grow up?”
  • “Will I be able to run with them, travel with them, remember their stories?”
  • “Will they remember me?”
Being healthy for your grandchildren isn’t about vanity.
It’s about
 legacy.
It’s about becoming someone who doesn’t just exist in their lives…
but fully
 participates in them.

The Quiet Fear So Many Women Carry

No one says this part out loud… but I will.
A lot of women—especially in midlife—carry this quiet, underlying fear:
“What if I don’t have as much time as I think?”
Not because we’re dramatic.
But because we’ve seen:
  • Friends get diagnoses out of nowhere
  • Family members decline faster than expected
  • Energy disappear before the years do
And suddenly, it’s not about the number on the scale.
It’s about:
  • Energy
  • Mobility
  • Strength
  • Clarity
  • Vitality
It’s about living well… for as long as possible.

Her Turning Point

She didn’t start with a dramatic overhaul.
No extreme diet.
No punishment workouts.
No “starting Monday” energy.
She just made a decision.
“I’m not going to wait until something happens to change.”
That was it.
Simple.
Powerful.
Non-negotiable.

What Changed (And What Didn’t)

She didn’t become a different person overnight.
But slowly… things shifted.
  • She had more energy in the morning
  • She wasn’t crashing by mid-afternoon
  • Her body started feeling less inflamed
  • She moved more—because she wanted to, not because she had to
And maybe most importantly:
She stopped thinking about “losing weight”…
and started thinking about
 gaining life.

The Declaration That Changes Everything

At some point, she said it again.
But this time, it sounded different.
Stronger.
Certain.
“I refuse to be the empty chair.”
That wasn’t fear anymore.
That was ownership.
That was a woman deciding:
  • She would show up
  • She would stay present
  • She would do what she could—while she still could

What This Means for You

You don’t need grandchildren to feel this.
You just need someone you love enough…
to want more time with.
Maybe it’s:
  • Your kids
  • Your partner
  • Your friends
  • Your future self
The question becomes:
“What would I do differently if I truly believed my presence mattered that much?”

This Isn’t About Perfection

Let’s be clear:
This isn’t about being perfect.
It’s not about:
  • Never eating sugar
  • Working out 7 days a week
  • Becoming someone you don’t recognize
It’s about becoming someone who says:
“I care enough about my life… to support it.”
In small ways.
Consistently.
Over time.

The Legacy We Don’t Think About Enough

When people talk about legacy, they think about:
  • Money
  • Accomplishments
  • Titles
But the real legacy?
It’s presence.
It’s:
  • Showing up to the game
  • Sitting at the table
  • Remembering the stories
  • Laughing at the same jokes
It’s being there… long enough to matter.

If This Hit You… Good

Because sometimes we don’t need another diet.
We need a wake-up moment.
Something that makes us pause and think:
“What am I actually doing this for?”
If the answer is still “to lose weight”…
you’re missing the bigger picture.
If the answer becomes:
“To live longer, better, and fully present…”
Everything changes.

Final Thought

I still think about that moment at the kitchen table.
About how casually she said something so profound.
And how it shifted something in me too.
Because the truth is:
We don’t always get to control how long we’re here.
But we do have a say in how we show up while we are.
So maybe the real question is:
Are you living in a way that keeps you in the chair?
If this spoke to you, take a moment to think about your own “why.”
What’s one small thing you can do today to support the life you want to keep showing up for?
For me, part of that has been finding simple ways to support my body from the inside out—especially in this season of life.
That’s actually what led me to the peptides I’ve been using… not as a quick fix, but as support while I make these changes.
If you’ve been curious about what I’m doing, I’m always happy to share.

Meet Maria Custode

For years, I was running on empty—long hours, low energy, poor sleep, and a body that just wasn’t responding the way it used to.
I finally realized… it wasn’t about trying harder. It was about supporting my body differently.

Now, I focus on what actually works:
more energy, better sleep, less inflammation, and a lifestyle I can sustain.
And I help other women over 40 do the same—without extremes or quick fixes.

Because this chapter isn’t about slowing down…
it’s about finally feeling like yourself again.

If you’re feeling off or stuck, I’m always happy to share what’s been working for me 💛
