Modeling Strength: The Health Choice That Becomes a Family Story

Modeling Strength: The Health Choice That Becomes a Family Story

When we think about health, we often think about numbers.
The number on the scale.
The blood pressure reading.
The cholesterol result.
The number of steps we took today.
But what if the most important outcome of improving your health isn't a number at all?
What if it's the story you're writing for the people who are watching you?
Most of us don't realize how much our families pay attention to the choices we make.
They notice when we say we're too tired to join them for a walk.
They notice when we skip activities because our knees hurt, our back hurts, or we simply don't have the energy.
They notice when we talk negatively about our bodies.
And they notice when we decide to change.
The truth is, our habits often become part of our family's story.

The Example We Set

Children and grandchildren learn far more from what we do than what we say.
We can tell them that health matters.
We can encourage them to exercise.
We can remind them to take care of themselves.
But what they remember most is what they watched us do.
Did they see us prioritize our well-being?
Did they see us make time for movement?
Did they see us choose foods that supported our goals?
Did they see us continue growing stronger as we got older?
Or did they see us believe that declining health was simply an unavoidable part of aging?
The example matters.

Aging Isn't a Spectator Sport

For many years, I believed feeling worse was just part of getting older.
Less energy.
More aches and pains.
Weight gain.
Poor sleep.
It seemed normal because so many people around me were experiencing the same thing.
But eventually I realized something important:
Aging happens automatically.
Healthy aging requires participation.
The choices we make every day may not feel significant in the moment, but they compound over time.
A walk today becomes stronger legs next year.
Strength training today becomes independence later.
Prioritizing sleep today becomes better energy tomorrow.
Small choices become a lifestyle.
And lifestyles become legacies.

What Your Family Really Wants

Most families don't care what you weigh.
They don't care what size jeans you wear.
What they care about is having you present.
They want you at the family gatherings.
They want you on the vacation.
They want you in the photos.
They want you healthy enough to enjoy the moments that matter.
They want memories with you.
And perhaps the greatest gift we can give the people we love is doing what we can to stay healthy enough to keep making those memories.

Strength Creates Possibility

A year and a half ago, my husband and I couldn't do some of the things we do today.
Long walks felt difficult.
Hiking wasn't even on our radar.
Travel often revolved around how much energy we had left.
Today, life looks very different.
Not because we're younger.
Because we're stronger.
And strength creates options.
It creates freedom.
It creates confidence.
It creates experiences that once felt out of reach.

The Story Continues

The beautiful thing about health is that it's never just about us.
Every healthy choice sends a message.
Every walk.
Every workout.
Every decision to keep going.
Every commitment to becoming stronger.
Someone is watching.
Someone is learning.
Someone is being encouraged by your example.
And years from now, your family may not remember exactly how much weight you lost or how many steps you walked.
But they'll remember the version of you who chose to show up.
The version of you who decided it wasn't too late.
The version of you who modeled strength, resilience, and self-care.
Because sometimes the healthiest choice you make today becomes a family story that lasts for generations.

Meet Maria Custode

For years, I was running on empty—long hours, low energy, poor sleep, and a body that just wasn’t responding the way it used to.
I finally realized… it wasn’t about trying harder. It was about supporting my body differently.

Now, I focus on what actually works:
more energy, better sleep, less inflammation, and a lifestyle I can sustain.
And I help other women over 40 do the same—without extremes or quick fixes.

Because this chapter isn’t about slowing down…
it’s about finally feeling like yourself again.

If you’re feeling off or stuck, I’m always happy to share what’s been working for me 💛
